Constipation is a very common disorder of the digestive system, occurring in about 20% of the population. There are several criteria for determining when someone is suffering from constipation, including three or fewer bowel movements in a week, the excessive effort required for defecation, and hardened stools that are uncomfortable to pass - even if the frequency is regular. Constipation is more common in the elderly, while women are in general more likely to be constipated than men.
Causes of Constipation:
There are a number of etiologies for constipation. Some are related to nutrition. For example, insufficient fiber intake and inadequate hydration. Physiological causes include weak pelvic muscles, anal fissures, prolapsed hemorrhoids, a stuck fecal mass, depressed colon activity, and more. Sometimes constipation can be a symptom of a serious illness such as colon cancer. Constipation may occur as a symptom of a number of diseases, or as a side effect of the use of certain medications.
Dangers of Constipation:
When a person is in a state of constipation, non-digested food remains in the digestive system significantly longer than is the norm. During this extended time in the digestive tract, intestinal bacteria cause the food to break down, producing gases and other unwanted by-products. If constipation persists, moisture continues to be absorbed into the intestinal walls, leaving the food being digested to dry up and develop into hardened feces, while the extra pressure can lead to hemorrhoids and/or fissures. More serious, the presence of bacteria can lead to intestinal infections. Constipation is also linked to certain types of cancer. And apart from all of the aforementioned problems, there is the very unpleasant feeling that accompanies someone suffering from constipation.
Prevention of Constipation:
Our modern lifestyle and eating habits have a strong influence on our regularity. Constipation should be treated as a warning bell informing us that we must make changes to our lifestyle and eating habits to prevent diseases and complications in the future. In general, the prevention of constipation depends on the following principles:
Drinking at least 12 glasses of fluid per day (wetter intestines and fecal matter allow for easier movement).
Eating regular meals distributed throughout the day, and avoiding processed foods (e.g. white bread, white rice, cakes, chocolates, and sweets).
Regular Exercise (It is recommended to walk at least 30 minutes every day).
Increasing dietary fiber intake.
Treatment of Constipation:
If one makes the recommended lifestyle changes (it is preferable to consult with a healthcare professional - a doctor, dietician, naturopath, etc.) and yet still suffers from constipation, it is best to resolve the issue using natural ingredients that are not addictive and that help the body to activate its own natural system designed to remove waste from the body.
Most people fail to make the appropriate lifestyle changes and end up using medications over a long period to prevent constipation and its complications. It is recommended to avoid synthetic laxatives, which can lead to intestinal damage as well as dependence on the medication.
